Hardcore Bands You Should Know
Band #2: Bad BrainsWhy is punk rock fast? Why does punk rock have sudden tempo changes? Two questions, one answer - Bad Brains. It’s because of Bad Brains that most punk music people hear are ridiculously fast. It’s because of Bad Brains that hardcore punk has developed a concept in which, somewhere amongst the chaos of its music, the tempo can be slowed down considerably in order to give the song a sort of groove. This is called a breakdown. Sure, most bands can play just as fast as Bad Brains today. However, keep in mind the time period - before Bad Brains, no one played with breakneck speed as fast as they did. Not even Black Flag. This kind of speed was revolutionary at the time, and could only be done with exceptional musicians, and as a group of ex-jazz fusion artists, these guys were exceptional musicians. They were also the first band to marry reggae and punk rock together, a step that would be taken later on with bands like The Police and Sublime. Before Metallica and Slayer were playing insanely fast guitar-oriented music, Bad Brains was your aggressive virtuoso band in the early 80s. You can hear their influence in the majority of hardcore punk bands, especially if they play fast.
